Explore the Land of a Thousand Lakes on an unforgettable self-drive adventure through the Finnish wilds - includes flights, car hire and breakfast throughout

Day 1: UK - Helsinki

Jet off from your UK departure airport to Finland’s capital. On arrival at the airport, you’ll pick up your hire car and head in the direction of your hotel - though you’re more than welcome to start exploring if the mood takes you. This incredible country has a whopping 188,000 lakes and around 180,000 islands and is a labrinyth of waterways peppered between pine forests. (Meals: none)

Day 2: Helsinki - Lappeenranta

After breakfast, leave Helsinki, heading east towards Lappeenranta. We recommend stopping off in Porvoo, the second-oldest town in Finland, on your way. Admire the landscapes on your journey - Finland is made up of over 90% water and forest, so nature lovers will be in a dreamland here. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 3: Lappeenranta

Today you’ll have a free day in the incredible natural surrounds of Lappeenranta. You could opt to cruise on Lake Saimaa, explore the charming town or, in the evening, visit the Imatrankoski Rapids, a famous local sight which is undammed into full glory a couple of times a day in summer. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 4: Lappeenranta - Joensuu

Delve into the true Finnish lake lands on your drive today to Joensuu, which will take you past Lake Saimaa, and Savonlinna, host of the famous Opera Festival. Don’t miss out on a visit to Kerimäki, to see the world’s largest wooden church, which glows a lovely, happy yellow in the summer sun. Outdoor activities abound here, and the Finnish would say that there are few better ways to experience their culture than to slow down, get on the water and admire the view. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 5: Joensuu - Jyväskylä

You’ll move on west today, heading towards Jyväskylä. This town is known for a rich variety of culture, and is the home of world-famous architect Alvar Aalto, with several buildings designed by him standing proud in the centre. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 6: Jyväskylä - Turku

After breakfast, you’ll leave Jyväskylä behind and drive towards Turku. In between the two sits Tampere, home to two lakes with differing elevations whose famous rapids have been a power source for centuries. Turku, Finland’s historic capital and oldest city, is your base for the night, and there are plenty of things to see here including a 13th-century castle and cathedral. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 7: Turku - Helsinki

You’ll be heading back to the capital today, along what is known as the King’s Road, one of the oldest roads in northern Europe. Settle back into your Helsinki hotel in the afternoon and spend a final night in the city. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 8: Helsinki - UK

After breakfast, depart for the airport, returning your car before you leave. (Meals: breakfast)
