An architecturally fascinating Cirencester retreat, once owned by an Elizabethan sheriff – includes breakfast, dining credit, spa discounts and house wine

The Roman town of Cirencester, deep in the heart of the rolling Cotswolds, is steeped in history. Its ancient Roman ruins and splendid architecture draw in countless visitors throughout the year. Standing proud in the hub of things on the cobbled market square is beloved town treasure, the Kings Head Hotel.

Once owned by an Elizabethan sheriff, with many a tale to tell dating back to the 14th century and before, it’s a listed building of special architectural and historical interest. Behind its 19th-century facade lie a host of standout features, like the balustraded staircase, wood-panelling and giant stone fireplace. There’s even a glimpse of original Roman mosaic under a glass panel in the floor.

The 21st-century attractions include a vaulted subterranean spa – a real retreat from the world where you can bubble away among exposed brickwork and scented candles. Elsewhere you can work out in a well-appointed gym. The bar, with squashy leather sofas and a well-thought out cocktail menu, is a local favourite and buzzes at weekends. Dining is equally pleasurable, and you can expect well-presented modern British fare in the smartly painted restaurant. The Kings Head Hotel trumpets a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.
