Old John Tower, Bradgate Park
A 500-year-old Leicestershire coaching inn in Market Harborough, on the historic London-to-Manchester trading route - includes breakfast
Located on the historic London-to-Manchester trading route, the charming Leicestershire town of Market Harborough has many a tale to tell. Much of the focus is on The Three Swans, a 500-year-old coaching inn which has played a pivotal part in English history over the years. In the 17th century, it's rumoured to have hosted Charles I, Queen Anne and her considerable entourage. A couple of hundred years later it was taken over by famous hotelier and restaurateur John Fothergill - a friend of Oscar Wilde and artist Augustus John.
Today, The Three Swans continues to treat its guests like royalty, with a warm welcome assured in the super friendly Fothergills Bar (overseen by a self-portrait of the man himself). Mingle with the locals and take your pick from a well-curated selection of local and international craft ales and beers. A carefully compiled wine list complements the modern British classics served in the restaurant.
Decor is equally pleasing, with the two bars and well-appointed guest rooms having been recently updated courtesy of the acclaimed Coaching Inn group, who have added The Three Swans to their extensive portfolio. It all makes a welcome prospect after a packed day out exploring the area – which includes attractions like Rockingham Castle and the National Space Centre. For its many charms, The Three Swans was awarded a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.
