The Villa Casa Casuarina
South Beach, Miami, Florida
A luxe Ocean Drive stay in a historic mansion – includes breakfast and a bottle of prosecco
Where better to experience high-end design than in the home of one of the world’s highest-end designers? The Villa Casa Casuarina, a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence winner in South Beach, has housed a number of notable residents, but its most famous is Gianni Versace, who lived here from 1992 until his 1997 death. His millions of dollars worth of renovations, plus the opulent, eclectic additions by restaurateur and later tenant Barton G. Weiss, have left this nearly-90-year-old Mediterranean Revival mansion – built by the son of the first Standard Oil treasurer – looking better than ever.
The living is just as luxurious as the architecture and décor, thanks to a rooftop lounge, the indoor-outdoor Italian restaurant and a well-appointed spa (complete with an aroma steam room and a meditation lounge). Suites are individually themed and named – yours might evoke the Ottoman Empire or show off walls of hummingbird and dove paintings – but all contain such extras as an oversized marble bath and sumptuous Frette linens. For a particularly decadent hour or two, you can even soak in the Poseidon-inspired swimming hole. Known as the Million Mosaic Pool, it features thousands of tiles of solid gold.
